Event: MVPA's 2009 Trancontinental Convoy(s)
Status Firm
Date: 13 June 2009 to 8 July 2009
Location:

The Convoy will follow the original route as closely as possible, i.e. the Lincoln Highway. The route crosses all or part of 11 states from Washington, D.C. to San Francisco, joining the Lincoln Highway at Gettysburg, PA. The route is nearly 3,300 miles (5,311 Kilometres) and begins on the lowlands of the Eastern Seaboard, traverses the rolling hills of Pennsylvania, travels the lush farmlands of the Midwest, crosses the high plains, dips into the Great Salt Lake Basin in Utah, crosses the Nevada Desert, climbs the Sierra Nevada and descends to Lake Tahoe, and ends in the splendor of California and the San Francisco Bay area. The Convoy will travel approximately 26 days across the country, with varying distances each day depending upon the terrain and services available, and will have rest/repair days built into the schedule.

The Convoy includes vehicles traveling the entire length of the original route, and those that are joining for a specific timeframe, a specific distance or region of the route. They may travel for a day, several days or several hundred miles.

In order to participate in the Convoy, one must be an MVPA member. We welcome our international historic military vehicle friends to also participate in this great Convoy, and they may purchase a membership to participate in the Convoy. Because of insurance requirements, MVPA membership is mandatory for all historic military vehicle owner/operators participating in the Convoy.

The requirements for the historic military vehicles (HMVs) are simple: Participants can drive any era HMV on the route as long as it has been restored to its original military configuration and color, from a Model T to a Humvee and anything in between. The vehicle must be in excellent mechanical condition. The owner/operator must have personal vehicle liability coverage. Other than official Convoy lead/chase/supply vehicles, no non-military vehicles will be allowed.
