I managed to arrive Friday afternoon on Oct. 22 and the weather was great, it was dry and not too hot. There were a few other fellows that I know arriving at the same time and they began setting up their displays. I unloaded my gear into the front section of the barracks and set up my cot in the office. A number of us went for dinner stopping at Penny's Cafe only to find they could only do takeout due to the lack of enough staff so we went to Dixie's and enjoyed some fine meals.
This event was for the 150th Anniversary of Hearne and there was a celebration downtown and we expected a good turnout from the public. The camp was built for the German NCOs that were a part of the over 300,000 POWs captured in North Africa. I wore my General Montgomery impression and I set up my British equipment for display on two of the bunks and some foot locks and readied myself to give a presentation about the battle actions in North Africa to the visitors as they came in.
We were well fed with Bar-B-Q and drinks for lunch and the weather was good with a little cloud cover and reasonable temperatures.
