LOCATION: Burnet, TX DATE: 9 October 2021 Grissom Air Museum visit Former Grissom AFB, Peru IN August 15 2021 LSMVPA members Scott P, Sam R, and Rory C spotted this museum on the way up to the National Convention and decided to stop in on the way home. It proved to be a relatively small but very high quality museum, and inexpensive to enter (free for veterans!). Inside the building were various displays of equipment and historical artifacts, including the nose sections of an F-4C Phantom and a UH-1 Huey. These were intended for patrons to climb into, so Sam and Rory unashamedly spent some time "flying" the Huey. Outside were a number of aircraft, all of which are maintained in excellent condition. Several were in the process of being repainted during our visit, which accounts for their rather plain appearance and some missing parts. Of special note were the F-101B and F-4 Phantom on display, both of which were flown by our own Ward B during his USAF career. An unusual item to see was the GTD-21 reconnaissance drone, this being a formerly very secret aircraft of which few were built. They were carried and launched from atop the SR-71 to overfly communist China during the Cold War. A museum well worth a visit if one finds themselves in the vicinity. Museum website Photo's
