EVENT: WW1 Over There
LOCATION: Camp Mabry, TX
DATE: 6, 7 October 2018

This event was for the 100th Anniversary of the first engagement of the 36th Inf. The date of the battle was Oct. 7, 1918 and the second day of our event was Oct. 7, 2018. The divisions units were just moved forward to the front and one regiment was given a mission on short notice to attack before their own artillery could be moved foreward. The battle was to last three days with the closest water available being five miles to the rear. They had little food, lacked some equipment, had little support from other units, little training, low on ammo before the attack. On the first day they lost most of their officers and NCO's yet, the men fought on and they were successful.

Our days started out with rain and it rained all around us for most of the two days. The thunder gave us the background sound of artillery. The temp's were in the 80's and everything was wet. There were still a few things to setup on the battle field and we did a lot of drilling before the battle in the after noon. We were wearing wool uniforms and it was very humid so, we were soaked. There was one Liberty truck that pulled a limber and 75mm field gun that Brent M. brought. There was also two model T's with one in use on the field. The two tanks fail to make it due to mechanical failures. We had about 50 Doughboys and 20 Germans. There were a number of real working machine guns on both sides and another field gun used by the Germans. The visitation (public) over the weekend added up to 1,914 (appropriately). There was some filming for a video to be placed in the Texas Military History Museum's newest exhibit of the 36th Inf. Division in WW1. I wore a copy of my Grandfathers Dog Tags to honor him as he was Over There.

Thanks to all who made this possible and took part.

We took the trophy for “FALLEN HERO AWARD”.

All in all we enjoyed the friendship time.
