The Dedication of the Smithville Memorial Park

The Lone Star MVPA arrived in Smithville around 11:00 Monday 27th of May 2013. We had 9 vehicles and 19 members or Family. We set-up behind the Dedication tent for a static display of 6 vehicles. At 11:30 three additional vehicles came to the location and set up on the edge of the street. Members visited and took cover in the shade of a large oak tree. Madison found our POC for the Meal tickets and we all ate together in the Smithville Recreation center. The center was only 75 yards from our vehicles! We had B-B-Q with all the trimmings. Besides the good food the air conditioner was great! After a pleasant lunch and good conversation we moved back to the Memorial Park! Senator John Cornyn and Mayor Mark Bunte were present and were guest speaker. The park is very nice with many walls lined with the names of all those Bastrop county who had died in any of the wars. The sections started with names of who died in the Texas fight for independence all the way through to Afghanistan. Beside Plaques with engraved names there were also engraved bricks which family members can purchase and have paved in the walkways!

At parade line up time we moved in convoy from the park to the Dairy Queen. The Dairy Queen being the land mark for the line up to begin. Once we were lined up all the Lone Star members and Family abandoned the vehicles and headed for the Dairy Queen! With the temperature near 90 the Ice Cream and orange slushes flowed. We boosted the Dairy Queen stock by at least two points. After our 45 minute cool brake back to the vehicles. At this time (2:00 PM) we were introduced to our honored guests who were to ride with us! These were mostly WW2 Veterans. Army, Marine, Navy and Air force were represented! We put those with health issues in the cabs of several vehicles. Sid had 6 in the back of his M37! The parade started soon after we were loaded! The parade was short and there were not lot of people out due to the heat! At the end of the parade we got all our guest back to their vehicles! The gentleman I helped to his car was a livewire! His wife was a livewire also. I asked do you want him in the front seat? She replied no he rides in the trunk!!! A big Thanks to our POC’s Kathy Karcher Park Director and SFC. Colin Scott Ret. Veterans Advisory Liaison. Colin rode in my jeep during the parade!
