Event: Western Oaks 4 July
Date: July 4, 2010
Location: Austin, Texas

Date: 04JUL2010
Location: SW Austin/Western Oaks subdivision
Attendees: Herb T ('43 Ford GPW), Scott S ('53 M38A1)

Herb and Scott attended a small local neighborhood parade for the celebration of Independence Day on July 4th. Under the threat of damp skies resulting from the last pieces of Hurricane Alex, the radar was clear so the "GO" decision was made. Herb and Scott convoyed the one mile to Mills Elementary School and were the first to arrive at 0835hrs for a 0900 parade start. Shortly thereafter, four Austin Police Department motorcycle escorts arrived as did one retired Austin Fire Department pumper truck. About 0950hrs, the Tiger, Cub and Webelo scouts arrived and formed up behind the motorcycles, firetruck and historic military vehicles.

At 0915hrs, with approximately 125 kids and adults, the parade left the elementary school and wandered the mile or so over to Dick Nichols park where a band was under the pavillion awaiting our arrival. Also there for the kids was a face painting booth, snow-cones and a reptile exhibit. Herb and Scott parked their jeeps in the park with all the parade attendees gathering around and the lines started to form for 'sitting behind the wheel'. Herb was quite patient with the kids in spite of the fact that his GPW has just come off a two year restoration. Scott just let them crawl all over his jeep so the kids could stand behind the gun one at a time for a picture.

About 1130hrs, the crowds were thinning. We packed up the jeeps and gear, said our "thank-you's" to the event organizer and departed the mile or so to our respective garages. Overall, the jeeps were a big draw with the parents and kids and the sunshine finally appeared for the rest of the day.
