EVENT: Burnet Air Show
LOCATION: Burnet , TX
DATE: 16 March 2024
Folks,
With threatening weather, Blanca and I arrived at the Burnet Airport in the early afternoon this past Friday to be a part of the Blue Bonnet Air Show. We unloaded the UTV "Mini B", the canopies, and other needed gear under one of the huge live oaks within our display site. Then we took off for lunch and shopping in the local antique stores. I found a few items to add to my military collection and for our saloon. We also went to the Townsquare and walked around a bit.
When we got back to the airport we found that Jeff, who was in charge of our site, had set up his jeep and military display inside the main hanger next to a C47 and other aircraft to be used in the air show. Jeff had been the museum director and arranged for other living history folks to stay the night in several rooms by and above the museum. With that Blanca and I were able to stay inside as well.
We had intended to sleep in the truck cab and only had some foam mats and an air mattress so we set those up upstairs and settled down for the night. Unfortunately, the air mattress had a slow leak but we had enough foam mats that I used one of those. I regret, that I should have followed Blanca's advice to set a chair by our bed for the following morning. Age sucks when trying to get off the floor.
As usual, I got up long before daylight and began packing away what I could leaving Blanca to sleep until whenever. I then took the truck and reattached the trailer in the parking lot for the day. I then set up one of the canopies and some canvas to block out the wind and mist. I mounted the weapons on Mini B and got things ready for the show while waiting for the water to heat up for coffee.
James H. arrived with a home-built army dune buggy in tow. As he unloaded he told me he had never welded and bent pipe before until he began this project. The buggy is very impressive and well-armed. Over the next few hours, other Lone Star members arrived with their vehicles. I am poor with names but to say, we had a good attendance with members and vehicles.
The show opened at 9:00 am to the public and being that the chance of rain was high there was not a massive number of folks rushing through the gate but our area did receive a good flow of visitors. Many folks stopped by our vehicles asking questions and taking lots of pictures. The main street was lined with vendors and food trucks.
Unfortunately, the Air Force canceled the F16s and A10s for the show three months ago. Due to the threat of rain, a few other aircraft bowed out of the show. Sadly only a few of the event's activities took place on the ground due to the air being so thick there was no visibility for flight. Afterwards, we all packed up our gear and a few of us mounted a short convoy to a local restaurant and had dinner.
