The Georgetown Air
Show (GTU) was very wet as it rained each day of the three day event.
The main discussion centered around the clubs locations. The WWII
group was inside the taxi-way which was secured just prior to the show each
day. This provided for a relaxed weekend with excellent security for
the vehicles and equipment yet at the same time did not provide great
exposure for viewing from the general public. The post-war vehicles
and equipment were located in the general public viewing area in a 'hole'
behind food vendors. The only exposure these vehicles and equipment
saw was as people were arriving or departing the air show. The
recommendation was to place all the vehicles and equipment inside the
taxi-way and divide them into their respective groups. |
|
The Kars For Kids
car show at the Austin Sonic Drive-In was well attended. In excess of
220 registered entries were recorded by 11:30am and there were many vehicles
that showed up after 11:30. All benefits went to "Comfort
House", a children's home in Florence, Texas. As of 14-May-01,
$18,554 had been raised through the various auctions for the home.
Barry brought his dune-buggy, Scott his M38A1 and Danny his daughters
civillian Hummer. Claude and Bill M also showed up. On the
schedule for the second Saturday in May, 2002. |
|
Long Range Desert
Convention is scheduled for this coming weekend (18-20 May). Still
plan on setting up Friday. The sponsor of the event has offered to
feed those that attend. There is a banquet and swing-dance scheduled
for Saturday night. This is to be an 'in-drag' event for your
period. So far, Barry, John K, Lewis, Danny, Scott and Toby have
indicated they will attend. |
|
Tatoo event was
held Saturday (12-May) at Randolph AFB in San Antonio. Jim W had
loaned two pristine WWII uniforms for the event and attended with his M38
along with Jim W and his half-track. |
|
Danny spoke of the
insurance question raised at the last meeting regarding insurance of the
vehicles at Camp Mabry for our use. He indicated his carrier said no
insurance is available for 'a day' and you can't insure other peoples
vehicles. Only the 'registrant' can insure their vehicle. |
|
The Flambouy
parade in San Antonio was attended by Jim S, Jim W and Don C the weekend of
04/28. Jim S
had the half-track there for two days which Don drove and Jim attended with
his M38 for a day. The parade was about 1 1/2 hours long in front of a
very large crowd. A very fun event according to Jim W. |

Lockhart
Chisolm Trail Parade is scheduled for Saturday June 9th in Lockhart,
Texas. So far Danny, Scott and Claude have indicated they will
attend. We have again scrapped the static display after the parade in
favor of a 'food event' of some type by the club.
|
|
A motion was
made by Toby for the club to provide a dollar amount of food for certain
events. A discussion followed with several members voicing their
opinions in the areas of pro/con, low dues amount, fund raisers and large
member collections up front vs reduced revenue in future years. It was
seconded by Barry as amended and approved. |
|
Pearl Harbor
movie premier is scheduled to open May 25. A discussion was held
regarding someone in the club to take 'point' and organize a club event to
attend the movie. This was then placed on hold until our June meeting. |
|
July 4 parades
in Shertz and Lakeway are on the horizon. Shertz will be a low-key
event this year. |
|
July 14 is the
McDade Watermelon Fest. More news to follow at the June meeting. |
|
July 18-21 is
the National MVPA convention in Ft. Lee. Toby indicated he will pick
up the Expert Driver awards for our members who have earned it while there.

General Information
and Good of the Club. . .
|
Danny asked
Scott to request a listing of all Texas National members and contact
information.
|
|
A discussion
was held on the pulling of the import ban. It appears that military
equipment is a bit easier to bring into the country now. A 'softening'
of enforcement' began 2-3 weeks after Bush's inauguration. |
|
Colin Garvy is
selling his 1953 CJ jeep done in pseudo-military configuration. |
|
Jim W has a
friend who is selling his M1911A1 .45ACP pistol for $699. Contact Jim W in
San Antonio for more details.
|
The meeting was
adjourned at 8:37pm.
