Early Saturday morning started out around 50 degrees. That temperature is not too bad unless you are driving an open cab Unimog 50+ miles to the event! As the day wore on, the winds at the Burnet airport continued to blow, and despite being a lovely sunny day it really didn’t warm up significantly until late afternoon.
This year we were back in our customary spot under the oak trees, which makes an excellent display area for us. On hand were Toby C with his MB jeep, John K with his MB, Matt W debuting his (formerly Danny’s) beautifully restored M151A2, Madison H with his M37, Mark A with his MB, Danny K with his M37 “Hercules”, Rory C with his Unimog, and Austin W with his M8 armoured car. Ward B and Clint D made personal appearances sans vehicles, Clint’s M38 failing to cooperate at the last moment. In addition to the vehicles, Madison had his display of all sorts of military items which drew a lot of attention from the crowd. Right across from us the Navy had a Chenowth FAV/DPV on a trailer. Doc and the Plane Girls were set up next to us.
With Scott S travelling, Toby took on the mantel of Grill sergeant and produced some very tasty hamburgers and an excellent pot of beans. All of the LSMVPA members and some folks from other groups ate well.
Despite the high winds the airshow was good. Some highlights were a spirited display by a MiG 17 (which shoots a lovely trail of flame when in afterburner); a USAF A-10 Warthog; the always impressive A-1 Skyraider; and a very nice UH-1B in Marine colours. A very unusual aircraft on static display right next to our group was a privately owned OV-1 Mohawk.
We had a good time until the end, then everyone packed up and headed home, all with a coating of yellow oak pollen. Hopefully the future scheduling of this airshow will not conflict with Muster Day as it would be nice for the club to be able to participate in both events.
