Event: Hutto Veterans Day Event
Date: 12 November 2007
Location: Hutto ISD, Texas
Description:

Monday was the last day of our 5-day Veterans’ Day event marathon.

Jeff L in his M35A2, John SS in his M820, and Rory with his 404s Unimog arrived at the Hutto High School at around 0730, and set the vehicles up. There we met future LSMVPA member Mark A with his beautiful 1942 slat-grill MB.

Mark stayed to watch the vehicles while Jeff, John and Rory headed over to the Middle School in the Unimog to attend the Veterans’ breakfast and assembly to which we had been invited. There we were served our food by some delightfully polite kids. Afterwards we moved on to the auditorium where the students did a play, a dance with red, white and blue banners, the choir sang, the school band played all the service hymns, and more. When it was all over and we were leaving, I think just about every kid in that school shook hands with us and thanked us for serving. All in all a very touching experience.
One very amusing moment was out in the parking lot. There a small child rushed up to John and hugged his leg tightly. With great sincerity the child looked up at him and said “I know you lost all your tanks and lots of men, but you did it anyway, you saved us from the Transformers. Thank you!” Being a veteran means different things to different people!

Back at the High School things were really busy. A Blackhawk helicopter was on display by the Elementary across the street, the Guard had brought in a Humvee, and Hutto FD and PD had several trucks and police cars on display. Unfortunately for us, they were behind our display and they were letting the kids play with all the sirens and PA’s. We put in earplugs and managed to maintain our sanity. The Patriot Guard Riders were there in force with their bikes, and John SS surprised us all by suddenly riding by on a Harley with a large US flag flying from a pole on the back.

Around noon, the Blackhawk took off, did an aerial display, then headed off. We packed up the trucks and headed over to another elementary school to give their kids a display. While there, the CAF did their flying displays over of all the schools with a B-25, a P-39, three T-6s.

Mid afternoon it was all over and we headed for home, tired but very satisfied with all the events.

You will notice that the younger kids’ faces have been obscured in the photos from this and other events; this is to protect their identities.
