The Lackland AFB airshow was a two day event
held November 7th and 8th in San Antonio.
Early on Saturday, those members with sensibly sized
vehicles trailered them down to Lackland- John K with his MB, Toby C with
his MB, Clint D with his M38, and Madison H with his M37. Rory C and his
kids drove down in the M813A1. Chuck B from Alamo MVPA was there with his
Jeep. Chuck, John, and Madison had impressive displays of equipment as well
as their vehicles.
Our display area was on the concrete next to the VIP
viewing area, with the USAF Thunderbirds directly in front of us, so we had
a great view. In addition to the Thunderbirds, who were fantastic as always,
there were displays by the F-15 (reportedly the last season for this bird),
F-18F, A-10, B-1B, F-117 Stealth, and flyovers by other aircraft. There was
an impressive Confederate Air Force show, and parachute displays by the Army
Golden Knights and the Navy Seals Leap Frogs.
The static display had dozens of aircraft and
helicopters, from huge to small, and included the new F-22 Raptor which is
to replace the F-15. The USMC was there with a display of vehicles and
weapons, and the USAF Red Horse, who do fast runway repair in combat areas,
had their vehicles on show. The Army had an interesting “video game”, a
convoy simulator in which you either drove or served as gunner on a full
sized Humvee, with full motion and 360 degree video. Very cool!
The crowds were huge and they had an unpleasant
tendency to climb on/in/over/through the vehicles, but no serious damage was
done.
Sunday was a repeat of Saturday, but with just the
M813 5-ton in attendance as the lone MVPA representative.
A special thanks to Chuck B for coordinating the event
and arranging the easy trip through security on the way in.
