| December 16th was delivery day for the Austin Police Department’s Blue Santa program, and LSMVPA was there to help. Blue Santa is a program where toys and frozen turkeys are donated to the Department by businesses and citizens in Austin to provide a Christmas to thousands of our less fortunate families. Similar programs are conducted by other agencies all over the country. |
Early Saturday morning Jeff L, John C, and Rory C, took Jeff’s M35A2 to one of the distribution points in Northeast Austin, where they met with Rory’s team from work. There the deuce was quickly loaded full with boxes, then driven to a neighbourhood where delivery took place. The police officers led or followed the truck in cars. The officers and LSMVPA members then hand delivered frozen turkeys and boxes of Christmas toys directly to the homes of needy families. Once those deliveries were complete, everyone assembled back at the distribution point, the deuce was reloaded, and off we went again to make the deliveries in another neighbourhood. This performance was repeated throughout the morning, and by 1pm the entire tractor-trailer had been emptied, its contents delivered to many dozens of families. With the mission complete, everyone headed home feeling good about what had been accomplished. The memories of the happiness of those little kids who were the recipients of their efforts will stay with everyone. Our group’s efforts were just a part of what went on all over the city. Deliveries are made by just about every APD officer who is not on duty, firemen, business groups, military personnel, and hundreds of private citizens, most of whom bring their own personal vehicles. Quite a showing. |
