Smaller but still a good time.
The rains had finally stopped. We must have been doing something
right to convince the rain gods to let us have just one good event in June
without moisture. For those of you outside of the Austin area, this
June was the second wettest on record with over 15 inches of the wet
stuff.
Anyway, Scott S. picked up Herb T. and they trailered Scott's M38A1 to
Lakeway. Late the night before, Herb was still dealing with
electrical gremlins in his GPW and just couldn't exorcise them in
time. (but it's close...) Danny K. trailered his M151A2/M416
combo and Glen V had a double whammy with his CJ2A and the MB of Jim
H. (aren't those long trailers great!) Rick H also showed up
with his M38A1 and John S and his friend drove his monster of an M35A2 in
from the Taylor area.
We met as usual at Scott Swensons' Auctioneers and this year shuttled
his group of Civil War reenactors to the staging area. We returned
back to his office and picked up the TAVV guys and gave them a lift as
well.
The parade started promptly at 8:30 and wound it's way through the
village of Lakeway. The spectators were sparce at the beginning but
filled in nicely towards the end. After the parade, we parked the
vehicles and waited for the parade to end so we could make our way to the
park for the picnic and party. John and Rick opted out of the party
in the picnic and departed.
Once the parade was over, Danny, Glen, Jim, Scott and Herb weaseled our
way to the park. One of us, (who will remain nameless) ran out of
gas on the way but the problem was soon fixed and arrival was only delayed
by a few minutes.
We setup at the park by the water's edge and just hung out answering
questions and doing the picture thing. After the sun really going,
we decided to wrap it up about 1:30pm or so. With that, we made our
departure, headed back to the trailers, loaded up and departed.
Overall, shorter parade route this year, fewer spectators, but still an
OK event.
