Texas is 166 years old today! This annual parade up
Congress Ave to the Capital celebrates the beginnings of Texas as a
state. It's also the start of the Livestock Show and Rodeo here in
town...
This has to be the coldest parade in the history of the club.
Temperatures started plummeting around 5:00am and when members began their
arrival around 8:00am, the temperature was already below freezing.
And there was a constant 20+ mph wind with gusts of 30 mph or more.
The chill factor was well into the mid-teens but that didn't stop an
EXCELLENT turnout of club members and others.
Danny K. brought his M151A2/M416 combo and Toby drove his M151A2 with
the hardtop to represent Vietnam. Both were dressed in full period
correct uniform. Other Vietnam vehicles included two M35A2's each
driven by Warren C and John S. Their wives also accompanied them on
the parade route. Glen V. brought his CJ2A MB replica, Tim W his MB,
Jeff McD his MB, John K his MB rounding out WWII. These guys also
were in proper period correct uniform. Wools of course due to the
weather. Barry F brought his "Desert Storm Buggy" which is
always a treat to see. Complete with more rocket launchers, guns and
little troll dolls then you can imagine! His wife and step-son also
attended. Scott S didn't bring a vehicle but did wear a period
correct Korean war uniform and carried a M1919A4 Browning. Well,
carried until it started to get heavy then he rode with Jeff!
The parade finally started at 10:30am and went straight North (into the
howling wind) to the Capital. There were many spectators out to
support the parade and a significant media presence. After we
arrived at the Capital, we turned South and headed back to our staging
area where we loaded up and headed home. A command decision was made
earlier to not participate in the static display.
Overall, we had an excellent turn-out from club members for such a
short parade on a blistery cold day. Count on this one again next
year!
