Rain-Rain-Go-Away...and don't come back. Ever.Chalk another one up for the rain gods.
Forecast was for more rain and sure enough, the weatherman was
right. Danny trailered his M151A2/M416 and arrived first in Elgin at
the staging area. He spoke with one of the event organizers who
indicated for the first time in 15 years, the Elgin Hog-Eye Festival was
cancelled.
Next, Scott arrived with his 1939 Colson bicycle. After
a short period of time, Tim W arrived towing his MB. A quick call to
Jeff McD indicated he was in Elgin with his MB at a friends place waiting
to see what the plan of action was. After some short discussions
about club business, Danny, Tim and Scott departed for home.
However,
Claude had arrived and reported the following: I arrived about 9:45
am after an interesting drive from the ranch in a light rain. The
windshield wipers just don't work well. Tried driving with the windshield
open. Even a light rain becomes a horizontal rain at 30 plus miles per
hour. After a mile or so I closed the windshield. Fortunately the traffic
was light. I cruised around downtown Elgin for a few minutes but failed to
see any other "Army Green" vehicles. Drove out to the school
parking lot to check for tow vehicles and trailers. Empty. Went back down
town and parked with the other four "porkticipants" in the car
show. Time was now a few minutes past 1000. Enjoyed free food from some of
the vendors and chatted with the other vehicle owners. The oldest vehicle
was a 1922 yellow Studebaker. Also attending were a 1966 Volkswagen Beetle
and a 1972 Buick Riviera. An early 70's El Camino left a few minutes after
I parked. A couple of "drag strip ready" Chevies arrived about
11:15. A short time later, returning from another food run, I was informed
of a meeting "just held" in which the decision was made to
cancel the Hogeye Festival. So the end came at 11:30 am. And I was so
hoping to watch the "cow patty" bingo. I said my thank you's and
the good-byes and entrucked.
As I pulled away the rain became
heavy. Interesting... I can see better in heavy rains than a light rain.
The rain coming in around the windshield, past the old, hardened, rubber
gasket seal, made the drive back to the ranch rather wet. Glad I was
there, more happy to be back home. Wet, soggy day.
The next day in the
Austin American Statesman, there was an article about how this was the
first time in the events history it was cancelled due to rain.
