Yet another GTU (Georgetown Air Show) in the books!
This year our club provided many vehicles and had a great turnout for
membership attendance. Members attending this event included Danny
and his M151A2/M416, Scott and his M38A1/M416/Colson bicycle, Glen and his
CJ2A, John K and his MB, JH and his M35A2 Wrecker/M105 and M1008, Barry
and his encampment and bicycle, Lewis and his M38A1 and Jim and his
half-track. Furthermore, Don C. brought several of the museums vehicles
including the Sherman and Hetzer along with a multitude of small arms,
cannons etc. Other members included Richard and Curtis, Web (the
fuelman/transport guy!), Greg,
Don L and Claude.
The group was divided into two sections this year. The WWII
vehicles and equipment were setup on the inside of the taxi way where
everyone was last year. It was a VERY impressive display complete
with GP's, vehicles, German encampments/vehicles and everyone dressed in
period correct uniform. It was the largest collection of WWII items
Central Texas has seen to date! The post-war vehicles were
placed in the crowd area behind food vendors at the bus stop. NOT a
very good place this year and there will be some serious discussion as to
placement for next year. There are pros and cons of placement in a
totally secure area or in the spectator area many of which will be
discussed at our next meeting.
Most of the club arrived on Friday and setup in the clouds and
rain. The Friday evening events were not as good as in the past,
especially the "wall of fire" which was more of a dud due to the
rains. Saturday's crowds were thin with a low deck for the
show. The impressive items included the F16 and F18 displays.
Only one B17 was present along with a single B25 and one A26. The
trainers were in force but the large hardware wasn't. Then the rains
started and the crowd thinned.
Sunday was quite different from the previous day regarding the
weather. Light mist gave way to sunshine which made the show more
fun for most. We were surprised at the number of people who leave
the show after the TORA TORA TORA show. The WWII guys put on a
fantastic reenactment and a B2 bomber did 4 or 5 passes over the
show. Just how a wing only flies was the discussion of the day!
As the show neared closing, the post-war guys starting packing up and
headed out. The WWII encampment waited until the conclusion of the
show before the packed up and headed home. Overall, the show had
fewer large planes as in past years and the spectator numbers appeared
lower. More topics for discussion... |
